Building a Stronger Relationship with Your Dog: The Importance of Accountability

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

Accountability is an essential part of dog handling and training. As a dog owner, it is important to recognize and accept responsibility for your dog's actions and behavior, as it is a direct result of your training and handling methods. By being accountable, you can ensure that you are using effective training techniques and providing the necessary care for your dog's physical and emotional well-being. Accountability in dog training and handling also promotes consistency, builds trust, creates a positive relationship between you and your dog, and helps prevent accidents or incidents involving your dog. In this context, we will explore the importance of accountability in dog training and how it can lead to a stronger, healthier relationship with your furry companion.

Firstly, accountability starts with the dog owner. Holding oneself accountable as a dog owner means recognizing and accepting responsibility for the dog's actions and behavior. One of my favourite dog trainers/behaviourists is Tom Davis. His slogans is "No Bad Dogs". It means acknowledging that the dog's behaviour is a direct result of the owner's handling ability, training methods and actions.

It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that they are using effective training techniques and have developed appropriate handling skills for their dog they have to ensure for the dog's physical and emotional well-being. This involves regular exercise, a healthy diet, proper grooming, attention to their dog's individual needs, and appropriate training. Holding oneself accountable as a dog owner can help ensure that a dog is happy, healthy, and well-behaved.

Secondly, dogs thrive in environments with strong fair leadership, routine and clearly defined consistent expectations and boundaries. Once the dog has been taught the acceptable behaviours and commands it is important for the owner to hold their dog accountable to that training through fair leadership.

Lack of leadership and clearly outlined expectations can cause confusion and frustration for the dog, which can lead to undesirable behaviour.

Ensuring consistency in training and boundaries helps a dog understand what is expected of them and can lead to faster progress in learning new behaviors and commands.

Thirdly, accountability helps build trust and a positive relationship between the dog and owner. Dogs are highly attuned to their owner's emotions and behavior, and they respond positively to calm, assertive leadership. By holding oneself accountable and the dog accountable, the owner establishes themselves as a trustworthy and reliable leader for the dog to follow.

Finally, accountability can also help prevent accidents or incidents involving the dog. By recognizing potential problem areas or situations and taking appropriate action to prevent them, the owner can ensure the safety of both the dog and others around them.

Accountability is crucial in dog handling and training as it ensures responsible ownership, promotes consistency, builds trust and positive relationships, and helps prevent accidents or incidents.
